Upfronts 2004: ABC
ABC startet zwei neue Comedies, sieben(!) neue Dramen sowie zwei Reality-Shows (ABC nennt sie „Alternative Series“ ;-)).
Am Interessantesten: „ALIAS“ startet nicht im Herbst. Erst zur Midseason wird die Show auf dem Platz von „Desperate Houswives“ am Sonntag abend in die vierte Staffel starten. Das bedeutet wohl im Umkehrschluss dass diese Season von Alias weniger Episoden als normale Staffeln haben wird oder dass ABC keine Wiederholungen in diesem Slot zeigen will. Ferner: Die Practice-Spin Off wird den „guten Namen“ ihrer Mutterserie beibehalten und heisst nun „The Practice: Fleet Street“ — und Captain Kir—err, William Shatner wird als „recurring star“ gelistet.
Etwas überraschend kommt auch die Absetzung von „I’m with her“. Die Sitcom hatte zwar nur recht durchwachsene Stories, aber die Quoten schienen noch im Rahmen zu sein.
Update: www.zap2it.com berichtet, dass von Alias eine volle Season ausgestrahlt wird – ohne nervende Wiederholungen. Grund für den verspäteten Start im Januar seien produktionstechnische Gründe, die es bisher immer recht schwierig gemacht hätten, mehrere Folgen an einem Stück bereitzustellen. So kann man nun im Sommer mit der Produktion beginnen und kann dann ab Januar 22 Wochen lang jede Woche eine neue Episode senden.

Bei den Produzenten kräuseln sich mir allerdings etwas die Fussnägel – einzig Autor Marc Cherry macht mir mit seinem „Golden Girls“ Portfolio etwas Hoffnung. Warum man aber ausgrechnet diese Serie als Ersatz für Alias nimmt, ist mir erstmal ein Rätsel
”Life As We Know It”

Und wow, Ex-ABC-Chef Stu Bloomberg ist Produzent. Der erkennt Qualität ja nicht mal, wenn’s ihn beisst.
”Lost”

sab meint: Cool, Reality TV goes Scripted Television. Und Matthew Fox ist auch wieder da. Ich gebe zu, J.J. Abrams gehört mittlerweile zu den Autoren, denen ich erstmal blind vertraue. Zumindest die grundlegenden Serienkonzepte sind immer sehr gut und ausgefeilt. Was dann im Verlauf der Serie daraus wird, steht meist auf einem anderen Blatt. Die ersten Staffeln von „Felicity“ und „Alias“ (so unterschiedlich sie auch sind) sind jedoch exzellente Arbeit.

Aber warten wir mal ab, was David E. Kelley aus dem Ärmel schüttelt. Seine Projekte der letzten drei Jahre waren ja alle durchweg Flops hoch drei.
”Rodney”
(half-hour comedy, Tuesday, 9:30-10:00 p.m., ET) — Stand-up comedian Rodney Carrington would like to take you to the middle of real, everyday America. In the tradition of “Home Improvement” and “Roseanne” comes a down-to-earth guy’s guy who, with his own heartland intelligence, speaks the truth.
Rodney is quitting or getting fired from jobs he hates while doing stand-up in dive bars at night. He may not have much money, but he still finds excitement. ”Savages”
(half-hour comedy, Friday, 8:30-9:00 p.m., ET) – Meet the Savage brothers. They smell. They’re slobs. And they love it that way. Executive producer Mel Gibson’s real life experiences of raising a brood of boys provide the basis for a take-no-prisoners comedy. Raised by their single dad, the Savage boys have had a succession of housekeepers – over 20 at last count – to pick up after them. Well today that comes to an end. Dad Nick wants his boys to learn the skills women don’t seem to take so much joy in anymore – you know: cooking, cleaning, laundry. Somehow this dad is going to turn his loutish boys into independent men, the kind any girl could take home to her mother. This is going to be some battle because Nick, just like his sons, is still a boy at heart.
Producers Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully, writers for “The Simpsons,” add their own family experience into the mix for a funny, honest take on raising kids. It reminds us that each child comes with their own personalities and problems, and that none of them come with instructions.

“Blind Justice”
(one-hour drama, Tuesday, 10:00-11:00 p.m., ET — at the conclusion of “NYPD Blue”) — A heist gone wrong. A gunman with an AK-47. Three officers trapped without ammo. His partner frozen in fear, Detective Jim Dunbar – without hesitation — took action of intense bravery that killed the gunman, saved the officers, and made him a hero. He also took a bullet that blinded him forever.
Most officers injured in the line of duty opt for desk jobs or early retirement. Not Dunbar. He’s rehabilitated both body and attitude and fought his way back to active duty. His fresh start at a new precinct is threatened by the simple truth that no one really wants him to work there. His new partner Karen Bettencourt sure as hell doesn’t trust him to cover her back. Fortunately, they’re all in for the shock of their lives because being blind makes Dunbar a better cop than he ever was. Steven Bochco’s new drama stars “ER’s” Ron Eldard as Dunbar and tackles the issue of handicapped employees head on. Unique visual effects give us a window on what Dunbar „sees“ with his remaining senses as he learns to be a better cop and a better man. He has a long way to go to conquer his demons, but at least he’s back on the streets.

Das sind ja radikal neue Konzepte. Nicht. Nachdem Steven Bochcos letztjähriger Pilot „NYPD 2063“ floppte (ein Cop aus unserer Zeit wird tiefgeforen und wacht in der Zukunft auf – dort muss er nun Gangster jagen — handwerklich beeindruckend, aber viiiel zu teuer) gibt’s dieses Jahr wohl die „abgespeckte“ NYPD-Version. Irgendwie muss man den Slot ja füllen — und möglichst im Genre bleiben, sonst wandern die Zuschauer ja alle zu den CSI und Law & Order Franchises ab…
“Eyes”

sab meint: Peter Horton führte Regie beim Piloten – das ist wirklich ein guter Name für Qualität. Ah, und jetzt weiss ich auch, wer Mark Gordon ist – der hat dieses Jahr wohl auch mehrere Eisen im Feuer. Katherine Heigl ist auch wieder da. Die Story klingt aber ziemlich verdächtig nach der x-ten Krankenhaus-Serie, die kein Mensch braucht. Naja, wie bei allen Serien gilt: Erst ansehen, dann finales Urteil fällen :-).

Ich glaube, das ist der Anfang vom Ende von ALIAS bei ABC. Warum? Nun, die Serie war NIE der Einschaltquotenrenner (über die Gründe kann man Bücher schreiben), und was ABC jetzt macht, ist meiner Meinung nach KEIN Vertrauensbeweis. Man kann nur hoffen, das „Desperate Housewives“ floppt, damit ALIAS eine Chance behält–obwohl es gegen über der neuen Serie unfair ist.
